About Skellig Michael

Skellig Michael — also known as Great Skellig — is a dramatic rocky island located approximately 12 kilometres off the coast of the Iveragh Peninsula. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is renowned for its remarkably preserved early Christian monastic settlement, perched on steep terraces some 180 metres above the sea.

The island's beehive huts, oratories, and stone stairways date back to the 6th century, when a small community of monks sought solitude and spiritual contemplation in this remote Atlantic outpost. The site remains one of Ireland's most extraordinary archaeological treasures.

Star Wars Connection

Skellig Michael gained worldwide recognition when it featured as a filming location for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The island's otherworldly landscape provided the backdrop for Luke Skywalker's refuge, bringing the ancient monastic site to the attention of a global audience.

Visiting the Skelligs

Boat trips to Skellig Michael depart from Portmagee and other points along the Skellig Coast during the summer season. The crossing offers spectacular views of the Skellig Islands — Skellig Michael and its smaller neighbour, Little Skellig, home to one of the world's largest gannet colonies.

Landing on Skellig Michael is limited and weather-dependent, preserving the fragile ecology and heritage of this unique island. Visitors who make the journey are rewarded with an unforgettable encounter with Ireland's ancient past.
