An overview of the Skellig Coast region, its landscape, and its communities.

The Skellig Coast Region

The Skellig Coast forms part of the Iveragh Peninsula along the world-famous Ring of Kerry. Stretching from Kells to Castlecove, this stretch of coastline is a place of rare natural beauty — where mountains meet the wild Atlantic and ancient history is woven into the landscape.

From the monastic ruins perched on Skellig Michael to the welcoming villages dotted along the shore, the Skellig Coast has long been a place that draws people seeking inspiration, learning, and connection with nature.

Our Communities

The Skellig Coast is home to eight distinctive villages and towns, each with its own character and charm:

  • Ballinskelligs
  • Caherdaniel
  • Cahersiveen
  • Dromid
  • Foilmore & Kells
  • Portmagee
  • Valentia Island
  • Waterville

Together these communities form the heart of the Skellig Coast, offering visitors a warm welcome and a glimpse into life on Ireland's south-western edge.

A Place of Learning

The Skellig Coast has a proud tradition as a place of learning — from the early monks who sought solitude on the Skelligs to the students and researchers who come here today. The region hosts a network of learning centres, including poetry festivals, summer schools, English-language schools, and research institutes.

Notable hubs include SMARTlab, Tech Amergin, the O'Connell Centre, and Sea Synergy, alongside cultural gatherings such as the Amergin Poetry Festival and the Daniel O Connell Summer School at Derrynane.
